YAK ATTACK

The "Yak Attack" is another attempt at a large fly that will imitate the herring that are here in big numbers right now. Brian Horsley a guide on the Outer Banks sent me some yak hair clousers that he said really work well for the stripers down on the banks. I was impressed at how nicely the yak hair looked. I started dreaming up my own ideas of what to do with the stuff and this is what ive come up with so far. The results have been very positive and I haven't taken the prototype Yak Attack off my leader in 3 days now!!!...The schoolies are consistently hitting the larger fly over the clousers.

Yak Attack

HOOK: Mustad 254SS size 2/0

BODY: Natural color Yak hair tied hi-tye style on top and below hook.

FLASH: Pearl Polar Flash tyed in between clumps of Yak Hair.

WING: Olive Yak Hair with 10 strands of peacock Krystal Flash and then a topping of peacock.

EYES: yellow mylar prismatic.

HEAD: Brush Softex into head to bend of hook to get shape and then dip into jar and set to dry.

If you have yet to tye with Yak Hair give it a try. It really looks sweet when wet and seems to be really durable also...It comes in long lengths (12 in) so I wrap it around the thread at the 50 percent mark and cinch down. I will be experimenting with some sand eel patterns made with this stuff very shortly so look for a fly or two tyed with this stuff again this summer.
