RAYS MENHADEN
with a twist
After seeing Mike Figliolis post in Reel-Time about
"effective flies", I emailed him and got this recipe. This is
basically a Ray Bondorew pattern with an added "flash tail" and a little
accent flash added.
Rays Menhaden
- HOOK: Mustad 254SS
- THREAD: Black flat waxed nylon or monocord
- TAIL: A dozen strands of white bucktail cinched down at rear of
hook. A half dozen strands of silver flashabou or Polarflash wrapped
around the thread at the 50% mark and cinched down to make a dozen fibers extend slightly beyond the bucktail. Next tye in
a white saddle hackle (dull side up) on top of the hook shank near
the bend of the hook. Next take a grey saddle hackle (dull
side down), and tye in on top of the white. Next take a light
blue saddle hackle and tye in on top of the grey saddle (dull side
down).
- BODY: Pearl body braid...Wrap body braid up near eye of hook and tye off.
- WING: Start by taking a pinch of white bucktail and securing down on
top of shank just behind the eye. Slightly roll the bucktail
around the hook so that you get a 180 degree effect. Next take
grey bucktail and tye in directly on top of the white. Add a
half dozen strands of lavender crystal flash. Next tye in a
pinch of olive bucktail directly on top of the grey. Finish off
by tying in a half dozen strands of peacock crystal flash or
Rainbow thread.
- BELLY: A pinch of white bucktail tyed in below the upper wings.
- HEAD: Black flat waxed nylon or monocord.
- EYE: white with black pupil
Mike said that he ties this fly on 4/0 hooks,
but since I didnt have any except long shank ones I tyed it on a 2/0.
This pattern, I'm sure, is much smaller than the one Mike describes, but
it still seems to do the trick. After receiving his email this past Saturday, I
went to the vise and tyed a couple up. I then headed out to Pamet
Harbor just before the tide bottomed out, and my fly fishin buddy and I
scored fairly well with this fly. We were hi-sticking them in the
current and just holding them off the bottom...No retrieve....bam bam
bam...Go tye some and see what I mean !!
Hey, hey, hey!!! Jeff...
PS....please forgive for the poor photo...I just couldn't seem to get the
colors to stand out...better luck next time.... ;-)
