CONOMO SPECIAL

This winter while attending a fly show outside Boston I happened upon Rich Murphy and the Conomo Special.  The fly immediately caught my eye while wandering among the many booths.  Rich was behind the vise and he was very generous in describing on how to tie the Conomo and many other patterns he ties using Easy Body.  The fly looks like a real winner and I heartily suggest you give it a try.  I made a few plans to fish with Rich this season and am sure we will sling a Conomo or two.  Also Umpqua Feather Merchants markets the fly and you can find it wherever Umpqua flies are sold.  Happy tying.....Jeff

Conomo Special

Thread: 3/0 Waxed Monocord, White and Fluorescent Red

Procedure:

  1. Wrap entire hook shank (eye to bend) with 3/0 Fluorescent Red monocord. Tie in tail consisting of: 4-6 strands of Pearl Krystal Flash over a 1/8" diameter x 8-9" long bunch of natural Polar Bear (Yak Hair, carefully tapered, makes a good substitute)

The tie in should extend from mid hook shank to the beginning of the hook bend. Apply superglue to the entire assembly.

  2. Slide 3/4" long piece of large pearl EZ Body over the hook eye and tie in at hook bend. Whip finish and trim the fluorescent red monocord. Apply superglue to the joint. Push the free end of the EZ Body toward the fastened end, forcing the EZ Body to double over itself., like a sock. Tie in white 3/0 monocord near hook eye with a half hitch. Wrap over the EZ Body, winding the monocord toward the hook bend to form a spreader cone. Apply a drop of superglue to this joint. Flatten the spreader to an elliptical shape.

  3. Tie in a collar consisting of natural polar bear (4-6" long) on the relative top, along the sides, and on the relative bottom of the hook shank ith natural polar bear. Each application should be about 1/16" in bunch diameter. The collar is tied in immediately in front of the spreader cone so the material flares over the spreader. For each material application, fasten the material with two thread turns and then distribute the material evenly along the hook quadrant by compressing it with the thumb and forefinger, and secure with 8-10 thread turns. Apply a drop of super glue to each collar quadrant after it is tied in. (Again, yak hair is a reasonably good substitute for polar bear)

  4. Tie in a wing in front of the spreader collar consisting of Root Beer Krystal Flash (4 strands) over Peacock Krystal Flash (4 strands) over olive Polar Bear (4-6" long x 1/16" bunch diameter) over lavender Polar Bear (4-6" long x 1/16" bunch diameter) over blue dun marabou (3-4 " long x 1/8" bunch diameter). Wrap this material toward the spreader so that the spreader forces the wing (and collar) to flare outwards from the hook shank. Apply a drop of super glue. Tie on 4-5 strands of 2-3" long pearl Krystal Flash on each side of the collar by making two thread turns, spreading the Krystal Flash the collar quadrant and fastening with 6 turns.

    ALTERNAITVE WING LAYUPS

    Blue Back Herring

    * Peacock Krystal Flash, 8 strands, 2-4" long, tapered Peacock Herl, 10 herls, 4-6" long
    * Gun Metal Grey polar bear (or substitute) (4-6" long x 1/16" bunch diameter) Lavender polar bear (or substitute) (4-6" long x 1/16" bunch diameter) Pink polar bear (or substitute) (4-6" long x 1/16" bunch diameter) Blue Dun marabou, bunch 1/8" diameter x 3" long

    All Black

    * Black Krystal Flash, 8 strands, 2-4" long, tapered Peacock Herl, 10 herls, 5-7" long
    * Black polar bear (or substitute) (4-6" long x 1/16" bunch diameter) Black marabou, bunch 1/4" diameter x 3" long

    * Apply a drop of superglue

  5. Slide a 2 ½ " long piece of large EZ Body over the hook eye and tie in at the base of the wing/collar. Wrap forward about 1/4" and whip finish. Apply a drop of superglue. Push the free end of the EZ Body toward the hook bend to force the EZ Body to double over itself, back over so as to enforce the flare of wing material over the spreader. The polyester reinforcing strips embedded in the EZ BODY should be removed prior to this operation. Tie in with 3/0 white monocord at the hook eye. Use a wood burning tool to neatly trim the excess EZ Bodyä extending beyond the tie in point below the hook eye and bevel the remaining thread and trimmed EZ Bodyä around the forward terminus of the head. The head is then flattened into an elliptical cross section with finger pressure.

  6. Apply color to the head cone as follows. Use permanent waterproof ink markers.

Blue Back- Olive over blue, with olive over upper half of the head cone and blue over the upper quarter of the head cone. Light Pink along the bottom.

Alewife- Light olive over upper half of the head cone and dark olive over the upper edge of the head cone exclusively. Light pink along the bottom.

All Black- Black over the upper half of the head cone.

  7. Apply 5 minute epoxy to the forward two thirds of the head cone and work through the EZ Body fibers to promote adhesion. Apply and align 3/8" diameter silver and black prismatic eyes to the head as the epoxy sets up.

  8. Apply a finish coat of 5 minute epoxy to the head covering the eyes, and providing a smooth finish surface from the vertex of the head to just beyond the eyes.
