BUNKER/HERRING

I really love this fly!!!  I came up with the pattern last winter while wintering in Colorado and dreaming of stripers.  The patterns that I had seen that imitated the larger baitfish were all fairly bulky which I felt takes away the needed action in such a fly.

Bunker/Herring

I had tried to make this pattern at first with a synthetic hair marketed  under the name of "widows web" but I couldnt get the translucency the way I wanted.  I walked into Larva Lace headquarters in Woodland Park and Phil Camera who is a very innovative synthetic tyer and who owns Larva Lace showed me a few packets of Near Hair....and Diamond Hair which is another form of "Lite Brite".....I bought a few packets and went back to the vise and finally came up with what u see.

The trick to tying this fly is to use just a dozen fibers of Near Hair for each layer or stack...The Near Hair comes off kinda like cotton candy so take just a very small pinch and then wrap it around the thread at roughly the 50% mark....Tie down a clump on top and then a clump on the bottom and work your way forward to near the eye and then finish off with Blue streamer hair and blue and black Diamond Hair...On lower upper wing, alternate a pich of pearl diamond hair in between the clumps of grey Near Hair.  Wrap the diamond hair around the thread as you did the Near Hair and secure.

The eyes are secured with a dab of goop and then a very thin layer of silicone is spread over the head and left to dry...The fly can be fished now or you can as I do brush on a coat of Softex over the silicone to make the head more durable.  This stuff is really neat and I finish all the heads of my Deceivers and Clousers with this stuff now for I believe it penetrates better and is much faster and easier to use than epoxy....

Give this stuff a try and watch this fly come alive!!!...Happy tying...Jeff
